Oscar-winning composer Trent Reznor in talks to score Star Wars VII

Trent Reznor, the Academy-Award winning composer behind David Fincher's 2010 film The Social Network, is in final talks to score the highly-anticipated Star Wars Episode 7.

Speaking to Deadline, director JJ Abrams expressed that he has been "considering" Reznor for a long time and says he is a big fan of his scores in Social NetworkGirl with the Dragon Tattoo and Nine Inch Nails.

"I have always wanted to bring the kind of atmosphere and ambiance that Reznor has provided into his works into the Star Wars universe. I feel that this is a perfect marriage of the material," Abrams added.

Abrams added that while he was also considering John Williams and his frequent collaborator Michael Giacchino to score the film, he ultimately decided that it is now time for Star Wars to have a new postmodern musical identity. "John Williams proved to be a popular choice among fans and Giacchino has been good at channeling Williams but I just think it is for the best to give Star Wars a new treatment in terms of the music," Abrams added.

Deadline reports that it is only a matter of days before the official announcement comes in as Reznor and the Disney are now sorting out the scheduling conflicts between Reznor's availability to score the film and the upcoming Nine Inch Nails World Tour.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross shared the Oscar for Best Original Score in the The Social Network beating out veteran film composers Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Desplat, John Powell and A.R. Rahman  in 2010.
